Cracking empathy
My revelation seemed to elicit some pity from the relatives. Aunt Sarah looked at me differently, with more understanding than before. Uncle Ray, who is usually so severe, softened slightly. Even Grandpa appeared to relax, his eyes losing some of their sharpness. The tension in the room did not evaporate, but it did ease significantly. Relieved, I drew a big breath, feeling as if a small step toward reconciliation had been taken, even though the road was far from complete.

Aunt Sarah took my hand and nodded in understanding. Her touch was warm and grounded me at that moment. ‘We’re listening,’ she replied quietly, her gaze encouraging me to continue. The whispers in the room subsided as more family members listened to what I had to say. Grandpa adjusted his glasses, leaning forward slightly to hear every word. A sense of cautious hope began to permeate the room, giving me the courage to continue talking.
